Description
The Old Almshouses is a house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, constructed of coursed squared ironstone with a steeply pitched wheat straw roof and brick ridge stacks. The building features a three-unit plan and is a single storey plus attic with a two-window range. The elevation facing Stratford Road has two small single-light windows on the ground floor, along with a one-light 18th-century metal casement and a two-light 20th-century metal casement in the attic. The wood lintels are painted, and the left gable includes a three-light 18th-century metal casement in a wood frame, which has a painted, chamfered wood lintel. At the rear, there is a renewed plank door in a moulded wood frame, and the windows are a mix of two-, three-, and four-light 20th-century casements with renewed wood lintels. The interior is reported to have beams and inglenook fireplaces, although it has not been inspected. The building occupies an important corner site at the junction of Stratford Road and Church Street.
