Description
Horley House is an early 19th century house, with later additions to the rear and 20th century alterations. It is constructed of ironstone ashlar under a hipped slate roof, featuring brick ridge and internal stacks. The house follows a central staircase plan and originally had a 5-window front, which has been extended by a further 3-window range to the left. A stone porch provides access to a 6-panelled door, flanked by pairs of sash windows with stepped stone voussoirs. The first floor has seven sash windows with similar stepped stone voussoirs, and a window above the porch is framed by a stone architrave surround. Five pilasters run through both storeys. The left-hand 3-window section is slightly recessed, and a string course runs along the first floor.
Inside, the house contains a 19th century staircase with a wreathed handrail, and a winder staircase to the rear. Original 19th century ceilings and decoration are present. 20th century interior alterations include plasterwork ceilings in a 19th century style and fireplaces. It is believed the house may have been built for John Hitchcock, who resided there in 1852.
