Description
The Chisnell Lift Bridge, located on the Oxford Canal, is an accommodation lift-bridge with origins dating back to the late 18th century, though it has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The bridge features a tilting wooden plank deck, wooden handrails, and two balance beams positioned at a raking angle. It is supported by brick abutments with concrete sills and has brick wing walls that have trailing edges and stone rubbing blocks on the faces facing the canal. This bridge is part of an important series of Oxford Canal lift-bridges, which are now a rare type in England.
