Description

This group of four headstones dates from around 1700 and is located approximately 1 metre north of the north aisle of the Church of St. James. Made of marlstone, the headstones are small and feature shield-shaped panels below shaped heads. Each head features a cross standing on a skull, flanked by crossed bones. The inscriptions on the headstones are partly illegible but include the dates 1692, 1695, and 1704. The use of the cross is quite unusual before the mid-19th century and may suggest a connection to Recusant practices.
