Description
The Old Rectory is a house of around 1700, with alterations from the 18th century and 1883. It is built of coursed limestone rubble with some ashlar dressings, and has Stonesfield-slate and plain-tile roofs with brick stacks. The house has a complex plan, arranged over two storeys and an attic. The central three-window section of the front facade, with a stone-slate roof, is the earliest part. It has 16-pane sashes beneath flat arches, and a 19th-century wooden porch sheltering the entrance on the left. A taller three-window range, also from the 19th century, extends to the left and features larger sashes below chamfered stone lintels, with a hipped roof sloping to the left and returning to the rear. A lower two-window range, dating to the 18th century, is situated on the right, and has small 2-light casements on the first floor and larger horizontal-sliding sashes below. The central and 19th-century sections extend to the rear, each with double-gabled projections; the earlier projection has a leaded cross window above a deeply-chamfered round-arched opening. Inside, there is an early 19th-century dog-leg staircase with a ramped handrail and a stone flat-arched corner fireplace.
