Description
The Hitchcock Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 2 meters south of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Deddington. It was created in the early 19th century by Cakebread of Bloxham and is made of limestone or possibly Coade stone. The tomb is designed in a Neo-classical style and features an elaborate rectangular shape, standing on a two-step plinth. Its panelled sides are flanked by consoles enriched with acanthus leaves, and it has a high cover surrounded by antifixae that are carved with anthemion ornament. Atop the cover stands a fluted and draped urn, flanked by flat scrolls. While the earlier inscriptions on the tomb are mostly illegible, a later inscription commemorates Sir William Hitchcock.
