Description
College Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse situated on Main Street, Wendlebury. The building is constructed from limestone rubble with wooden lintels, and has a Stonesfield-slate roof and brick stacks. The main part of the front facade consists of five windows, although the right-hand portion is a later, symmetrical build with a three-window arrangement. This section features a central four-panel door, flanked by three-light casement windows and two-light casements above. This section has end stacks with paired shafts. The two-window section to the left is slightly later and has two-light casements at the first floor and a three-light casement in the left gable wall. The rear of the main range includes a projecting gabled stair tower. A lower wing to the rear of the later section has a large sash window with six panes and a gable stack.
Inside, there is a large open fireplace with stop-chamfered bressumer, an inglenook, and a bread-oven door. Other features include timber-framed partitions, old plank doors, and a butt-purlin roof. A retaining wall constructed from rubble runs across the front of the property, bordering a stream, and is topped with 19th-century cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lys finials.
