Description
These stables and coach houses were likely built around 1890 for Henry Tubb, a Bicester banker. They are constructed of dressed and coursed limestone with freestone dressings, and have slate roofs with stone-coped gable ends and lead roll ridges. Stone axial and gable-end stacks are also present. The building has a distinctive H-shaped plan, featuring a small forecourt to the north and longer wings to the south, framing a larger courtyard. Designed in the Italianate style, the north front has a three-bay centre with arched ground-floor openings and three small gables adorned with oculi (circular windows) and small finials. Flanking wings are two storeys high, with rusticated quoins, oculi on the ground floor, and round-arched windows above. The courtyard-facing south side mirrors these gables, and includes a central segmental arch doorway with a hoodmould, alongside carriage doorways to the left and right, both with elliptical arches and hoodmoulds. Long, single-storey wings extend from the right and left sides of the courtyard. The south-east wing features segmental-headed sash windows and round-headed doorways, all with moulded architraves and keystones. The south-west wing has carriage doors; both wings have large round-headed sash windows in their gable ends. A low wall, built with ashlar stone and featuring gate piers topped with ball finials, encloses the south side of the courtyard. A lead-clad clock tower rises above the centre of the main range, topped with a low, square dome and finial. The interior was not inspected.
