Description

Southrop House is a house dating from the 17th century, with a wing added during the 18th century. It is located on the west side of Southrop Road, Hook Norton. The house is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone rubble with a stone slate roof laid to diminishing courses, and features stone copings. Three paired stone stacks are present at the end and ridge. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with one wing projecting towards the road.

The original 17th-century section of the house consists of three units and one storey with an attic. The 18th-century wing comprises two units and two storeys with an attic. The right-hand section of the original 17th-century house was likely refenestrated during the 18th century, featuring wooden mullioned and transomed windows with crown glass. Two stone mullioned windows with hood moulds and label stops are preserved on the ground floor elevation facing the road. The main entrance is now located within the 18th-century wing, which has a double-gabled front creating an M-shaped roof. The three floors of this wing are illuminated by four-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows with crown glass. The rear elevation retains three stone mullioned windows with hood moulds, though some stonework has been renewed in the 20th century. A 20th-century bay window is also present on the rear.

The interior of the original house retains a two-unit plan, and features stop-chamfered beams with run-out stops. The house was owned by the Treadwell family at the end of the 18th century. A date plaque on the rainwater head is attributed to Richard and Sarah Parkes.
