Description
Buckell and Ballard is a house and shop located in Banbury Market Place, dating from the 17th century with later alterations. The building is constructed of stucco and features a tile roof with a brick end stack on the right side. It has two storeys plus an attic and a single-window range. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, while the first floor boasts a four-light stone mullioned window with a hood mould and label stops. A large gabled dormer on the roof contains a two-light stone mullioned window, also with a hood mould and label stop. Notably, the building has cavetto moulded mullions, which are considered a rare example in Banbury. Inside, there is a wooden winder staircase. Historically, the building may have been used by the Blue Coat School and served as Banbury Gaol from around 1649 to 1852.
