Description
The former school and adjoining house, originally listed as The School, is located on North Lane in Weston on the Green. The cottage, likely from the 17th century, and the school, from the 18th century, have undergone alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring some wooden lintels and brick dressings, with thatch and plain-tile roofs, and a rubble and brick stack.
The structure has a two-unit lobby-entry plan, which has been reduced, with rear wings and a school range. It stands two storeys plus attics, along with a single-storey section. The house has a two-window front, with a doorway featuring a four-panel door in a 20th-century porch to the extreme right, below a two-light window that has been reduced to one light. The bay to the left contains two-light casements on both floors. The left end wall displays aligned windows across three floors. The roof features a large rubble-based four-shaft stack aligned with the entrance.
The lower rear wing extends from the back of the stack, and an adjoining wing, likely added later, has a large rubble-based lateral stack. The thatched single-storey school range is attached to the right, with its extreme left bay likely being part of the house originally and now reduced in height. It has a three-light casement with a brick segmental arch, similar to the three casements in the rest of the school range, which projects forward. The extreme left of the school range includes a plank door in a brick-arched porch. The lower slated bay to the extreme right is probably from the 19th century and includes an additional entrance. The school roof features a small wooden ridge ventilator aligned with the main entrance and, on the right gable, a small bellcote that is corbelled out over a cross-shaped gable vent. The interiors have not been inspected, and the school range was likely originally a small barn.
