Description
Mulberry Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-17th century, with some parts possibly being older, and it was partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone and features wooden lintels, with a concrete plain-tile roof and brick stacks. The layout consists of a 2-unit through-passage plan with additional subsidiary ranges. The cottage is two storeys high, plus attics, and has a two-window front on the main section. The doorway, which is now a window, is located at the extreme right, and there are two 2-light casements on each floor, along with a small stair window to the left of centre. The roof is very steeply pitched and has stacks at both ends and to the left of centre. To the right, there is a 3-unit range, and to the left, a single-bay extension that has been raised to align with the main roof, although the right range may represent an earlier structure. Inside, the main range features a spiral staircase leading to the attics, stop-chamfered beams, and a large central stack with an inglenook fireplace, where a Hearth Tax Certificate was found. The passage has been removed, and the right range retains a large open fireplace. The cottage was probably built for members of the Drake family.
