Description
The Barn House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century and was extended in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof. The early 19th-century extension to the right has stone end stacks, while the central 17th-century block has brick end and ridge stacks.
The main part of the house has a two-unit plan with a central through-passage, which is now blocked. The central block is two stories high and has a two-window range. It features early 19th-century keyed stone lintels above a 20th-century door, early 19th-century eight-pane sash windows, and a canted bay window with sashes. The two-story bay to the right also has stone lintels over early 19th-century eight-pane sashes, and there is a similar gabled block at the rear.
At the back, there is a mid-18th-century two-story block made of similar materials, which has a brick end stack and an adjoining early 19th-century stairwell. To the left, there is a mid to late 18th-century service range built with similar materials, featuring gabled half dormers and steps leading to a former granary.
Inside, there is an early 19th-century fireplace to the right. The central block has stop-chamfered beams and a stop-chamfered doorframe at the center. There is a stop-chamfered bressumer over the open fireplace to the right, and an old plank door leads to the winder stairs on the left. The roof is a collar-truss design with butt purlins.
