Description
The barn and stable, located about 20 metres north of the Gatehouse, date from the 15th and 16th centuries. They are timber framed and weather boarded, partly resting on a sandstone base, with plain tiled roofs. The north elevation features the barn on the right, which has a half hipped roof and an open lean-to outshot across the front, along with a central gable at mid-storey. To the left is a two-storey stable block with a half hipped roof, featuring a wooden casement on the first floor and three on the ground floor, along with a central recessed half door. An external stair leads to the upper floor, which has a boarded door. The rear elevation of the barn includes carriage doors and casements.
Inside, the barn is a notable four-bay structure with arched braced tie beams and crown posts, featuring straight braces to the collars and beams. The adjacent two-storey building has stabling on the ground floor and a pigeon loft on the first floor, with a three-bay clasped purlin and wind-braced roof, showcasing eccentric bracing of good quality. The interior is heavily soot blackened, suggesting that this building may have served as an early cast or external kitchen, or possibly a brewhouse, given its location at the lower end of the Gatehouse.
