Description

This is a group of three chest tombs located approximately 6 meters north of the porch of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The tomb closest to the church is made of white marble and is shaped like a sarcophagus. It is completely overgrown with ivy, so no inscription could be seen. Another nearby white marble chest tomb is rectangular in shape, featuring a flat lid with moulded edges and a moulded plinth. It has panelled corner pilasters and plain rectangular panels on each side. The south panel has collapsed, but the remains of the inscription in Roman serif capitals indicate that it commemorates Jacob Jeddere, who died in 1833. The third chest tomb is made of sandstone and has a similar form, with projecting panels that have indented corners. The inscription on the south side, also in Roman serif capitals, records the death of John Beecher of Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, in 1830.
