Description
Maplehurst Mill House is a mill house and old mill, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations from the 18th century and early to mid-19th century. The building is timber framed and clad with red brick, featuring tile hanging and weatherboarding on the rear wings. It has a lobby entry plan and stands two storeys high beneath a hipped roof with gablets. A large moulded and filleted central stack is complemented by a stack at the rear right. There are two tripartite sashes on each floor, with cambered heads on the ground floor, small central casements on the first floor, and a boarded central door on the ground floor. A half-glazed door and casements are located on the right return.
The rear includes a hipped two-storey wing and a gabled, weatherboarded three-storey wing, which is the original mill. There is also a 20th-century one-storey hipped extension. The weatherboarded range runs east-west across the stream and appears to be the earliest part of the structure, showcasing exposed framing of medieval character. The upper floors were remodelled in the 18th century, and the building likely served as a combined house and mill, similar to what remains at Swanton Mill in Mersham, Kent. The lobby entry range is a later addition, positioned at right angles to the main structure. The mill, built in 1756, is located to the northwest and is connected by a canted two-storey piece, which is likely a 19th-century infill. Historical records indicate that the "old mill" was situated close to the "new" mill of 1756.
