Description
Broadlake is a house located on Frittenden Mill Lane, originally built in the 15th century and extended in the late 16th or early 17th century, with further modifications in the late 19th century. The structure features a timber frame with exposed plaster infill and red brick extensions, topped with a plain tiled roof.
The entrance front of the late 19th-century block is two storeys high, while the late 16th-century cross-wing to the right is three storeys and jettied, supported by dragon posts and console brackets. This wing has a moulded bressummer and a plain bressummer on the jettied gable, also resting on scrolls. The late 19th-century elements include a pierced bargeboard and ridge tiles. There are stacks at the rear left and clustered stacks at the rear right, with an earlier stack also present.
The house features a wooden casement window in the gable, three wooden casement windows on the first floor, and a brick bay to the left. There is an intrusive late 19th-century framed canted bay on the ground floor to the right, with a central door consisting of six panels set in a gabled porch. The right return has margin light glazed doors.
The interior includes a cambered tie beam, possibly for a crown post, in the rear wing. The circa 1600 wing showcases fine quality chamfered beams and dragon beams, along with floorboards, high ceilings, and inglenooks. A late 19th-century staircase with slat balusters is also present.
