Description
Poplar House is a house that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the early 18th century. It features a timber frame that is clad with red and blue brick and weatherboarding, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has a lobby entry plan, likely originating from a hall house design.
It stands two storeys high, with both return elevations jettied and adorned with a moulded wooden modillion eaves cornice. The roof is half-hipped on the left side and hipped on the right, with a cluster of cruciform stacks located on the center left. The first floor has two three-light and two two-light wooden casements, while the ground floor includes a three-light metal casement and three and two-light wooden casements. A boarded door is positioned to the center left of the façade.
Notably, the stack features a plastered section with an incised heraldic crest. The house may represent an end-jettied hall house, a re-fronted Wealden house, or a re-fronted continuous-jetty building, with possible construction dates ranging from the early 15th century to the mid-16th century.
