Description

Cluncher Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 17th and 18th to 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is clad with red brick on the ground floor and weatherboarding on the first floor. The frame is exposed on the left side, showcasing a small panel frame with ogee bracing and plaster infill. The roof is plain tiled and has a four-bay lobby entry plan. The building stands two storeys high on a partially exposed stone plinth, with a break in the brick bonding at the right end bay, which has a single exposed framing post. The fenestration and weatherboarding are also set at a lower level on the right. The roof is half-hipped with gablets, particularly pronounced on the right side, and there is a cluster of stacks at the centre right. The cottage has five irregular wooden casements on each floor, consisting of 1, 2, and 3 lights, along with an additional casement at the left end in a tile-hung outshot. The original entry was located at the centre right but is now accessed through a half-glazed door in the rear right return. There is a half-hipped rear wing. Inside, the end right bay is framed separately with doubled main posts and beams in the stack bay. The main roof features clasped purlins and windbraces, while the end right bay has a queen strut roof set at a lower level. Throughout the interior, there are tongue-stopped chamfered beams and brick inglenooks.
