Description
Sissinghurst Court is a house dating from the 17th century, with significant additions made around 1920. The building features part timber framing on the southwest side, with a ground floor of red brick and exposed close studding above. It has a plain tiled roof.
On the south side, there is a half-hipped return wing to the left, which is the original part of the building, and a lower gabled projection to the right. The wing has moulded barge-boards and is two storeys tall with a garret. The fenestration is irregular, featuring five windows on the first floor, with a cornice-hood over the central window, and five windows on the ground floor. The windows are wood-framed moulded lattice casements. To the left, there is a Tudor-arched doorway with a moulded surround and a boarded door.
The east front, which serves as the entrance, has a long return wing to the left that is completely blank, featuring a projecting chimney breast and a tall stack at the angle. This wing has one window on each floor. There is a long dormer in the east wing with a gabled projection to the right. The entrance features a Tudor-arched doorway with a moulded surround and floral carvings in the spandrels, alongside a boarded door to the left of the projection. There is also a long lattice wooden mullioned window to the left. The casements include oval stained glass inserts and lattice glazing. A service wing is located to the right behind the main structure.
Attached to the left-hand wing is an entrance wall that is 15 yards long, featuring central gate piers with ball-finials. The railed gate has scrolled panels, dog-rails, and a decorative overthrow. Inside, there is some plasterwork from the 20th century and evidence of substantial timber framing in the older part of the building.
