Description

This is a row of five headstones located approximately 3 meters northeast of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Speldhurst. All the headstones date from the 18th century and commemorate various members of the Jarret family. They are upright sandstone slabs, ranging in height from 150 to 600 millimeters, and feature shaped heads.

Four of the stones are adjacent to each other and have crossed arrows inscribed on their heads. Another headstone, situated about 2 to 3 meters to the north, has a double curvilinear head and a recessed double front with a moulded frame. The heads of this particular stone are decorated with hourglasses among scrolls. All headstones are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The double-headed stone commemorates John Jarret, who died in 1763, while the earliest of the others marks the death of Richard Jarret in 1725, although not all inscriptions are easily legible.
