Description

43-47 High Street is a Grade II* listed building that originally served as a cloth hall and is now a shop. It dates from the late 15th century, was floored in the later 16th century, and clad in the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed, with weatherboarding on the left side and tile hanging on the right. It features a plain tiled hipped roof, a large return gabled wing to the right with bargeboards that jetties over the ground floor, and a smaller jettied gable on the left return wing. There is a tall brick stack at the rear left. The building has two storeys with an attic only in the left gable. The first floor has four windows, while the ground floor has four windows and a single window to the left. There is a two-storey hexagonal bay to the left. The 19th-century wood-framed casements are present, along with a shop front to the right that includes a glazed door to the left, a small shop front to the right of centre with a glazed door to the right, and a large shop front to the left of centre with a glazed door to the right.

Inside, the ground floor of the former hall features a very heavily moulded beamed and panelled ceiling, supported by a substantial frame of large scantling. The roof includes collars, although the collar purlin over the hall has been removed, with side purlins remaining.
