Description
The Midland Bank and Phillips' Outfitters is a pair of shops located on Cranbrook High Street. The building dates back to the 16th century, with 18th-century cladding. It features a timber-framed structure with a stuccoed first floor at the front and a plain tiled roof. A very tall ridge stack is positioned to the left of the center. The building has a continuous jetty over the ground floor, which has been underbuilt. It stands two stories high and has an irregular arrangement of five windows on the first floor, all of which are glazing bar sashes. The ground floor has two 20th-century double shop fronts with inset central doorways. Inside, there is a substantial timber frame with jowled posts and a side purlin queen strut roof. There are remains of a lower roof within the current 16th-century structure, which is intriguing but does not appear to be older than the main roof. Additionally, there is a very large stack that may have been inserted later.
