Description
This is a barn located 60 yards north of the west range of Sissinghurst Castle, dating from the early 16th century. It is constructed of red brick and features plain tiled roofs with tumbled parapets at the gables. The barn has buttresses on both sides of the center, with three on each side. There are breather openings on three levels to the left of the center, while those on the right are concealed by a lean-to catslide extension. The central entrance is a pointed-arched wagon entrance, which mirrors another entrance to the north, and it has a pentice hood above and boarded doors. There is a mid-stray to the north.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays with a Queen-post side-purlin roof and some wind-bracing. A winding hoist is attached to a beam in the roof. This barn is depicted in an engraving from 1760 by James Peak, which shows brick end stacks. It is connected to a range of outbuildings from the 19th century on the left, although that part is not listed.
