Description

Stream Cottage is a cottage likely dating from the 16th century, substantially re-fronted in the 18th century. The construction is timber-framed, with the ground floor re-faced in brick, the north-west side weather-boarded, and the south-east side tile-hung. It has a hipped tiled roof and a large brick chimneystack, rebuilt above the ridge. The building has a plan of two storeys and two bays, with a catslide projection to the south-west.

The south-east side features a ground floor of English bond brickwork, surmounted by a tile-hung upper floor, with three wooden casement windows. The north-west side has an English bond brick ground floor and a weather-boarded first floor, with a 20th-century metal casement window and two wooden casement windows on the ground floor. The south-west catslide projection has a fairly random brick bond. The entrance is characterized by a moulded architrave, a 20th-century plank door, and a small casement window alongside it.

Inside, the north-east ground floor room contains a large, partially infilled open fireplace, alongside a massive roll-moulded bressumer running north-west to south-east. A roll-moulded cross beam with a barred stop is supported on a post, running south-west to north-east. The north-west ground floor room exhibits visible upright posts, wallplates, and a chamfered axial beam. A half-winder wooden staircase leads to the first floor, where the tapering upper part of the chimneystack is visible. The timber frame, featuring jowled corner posts, studs, and curved diagonal braces, is exposed on all four walls; the north-east wall appears to have an original blocked window opening, likely filled in when Roadside Cottage was constructed. Ledged plank doors are present, and the room above the sitting room has a wooden fireplace bressumer, with a mid-20th century brick fire surround. A section of lath and plaster was visible in one room, though roof access was unavailable.
