Description
This pair of mid 19th century monuments is located about 25 metres south-west of the Church of St Lawrence in Hawkhurst. The earliest monument dates to 1844 and features a tall pedestal with Greek revival details, including semi-circular pediments adorned with anthemion decoration, topped with a draped urn. Surrounding the monuments is a cast iron railing with spear-headed tops. One of the monuments commemorates George French, who died in 1850, and includes a large Greek revival chest tomb. This chest tomb has fielded inscription panels and panelled corner piers that are topped with stylised palm-leaf capitals, supporting a marble hipped top slab.
