Description

Wetheringhope is a mid-18th century house located on the west side of The Moor in Hawkhurst. It is constructed of red brick and has tile hanging on the right return, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, set on a plinth with a rendered plat band and a cornice at the parapet. The hipped roof features two flat-roofed dormers and chimney stacks on both the left and right sides.

The house has a regular arrangement of windows, with two glazing bar sashes on each floor and a central wooden Venetian window with a pediment on the first floor. The ground floor has a six-panel door at the center, framed by an enriched open pediment supported by Doric engaged columns, and features a traceried tympanum. The left return includes a two-storey canted bay and an additional canted bay oriel on the first floor, supported by wooden posts. The right return has projecting two-storey extensions that are also tile hung.

Inside, the house features a dado rail throughout the rooms and a staircase with a central single flight leading to landings on all sides, complete with turned balusters and a chinoiserie-pattern balustrade on the landings. The staircase hall has an elliptical arched opening. Attached to the right are reconstructed walls made of red brick, approximately two feet high, with corner piers topped with urn finials and wrought iron rails. The walls have scrolled panelled principals and a central round-headed gate with a scrolled over-thrown design. These walls extend to the south and west of the house, standing about five feet high on a plinth and are regularly buttressed.
