Description

Grey Cottages is a house dating from the 16th century, significantly altered in the 18th century. It is timber framed and originally constructed with red brick on the ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor, though the road front and corner are painted. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, hipped to the west, with one dormer window facing the road and two to the north. Brick stacks are located to the east and on the north slope, with a projecting breast stack situated just behind the front. The building is two storeys high with attics. A shop front fronts the road, with two square oriels situated on the first floor above modern shop fronts and a half-glazed door with a transom light. The north side has an irregular arrangement of windows, including a large square oriel with Ipswich glazing and a panelled door with a fanlight. A two-storey weatherboarded extension, with a hipped roof, adjoins the east side.
