Description
This is a row of five headstones belonging to the Chittenden family, located 2 to 10 metres north of the Church of St Lawrence in Hawkhurst. The headstones date back to the early 18th century.
The first headstone commemorates John Chittenden, a clothier who died in 1706. It stands about 3 feet high and features a raised surround with a scrolled and domed-shaped head, adorned with a crude incised skull and crossed bones. The second headstone is for John Chittenden, who died in 1737. This one is approximately 3½ feet high and has a more ambitious but still crudely executed design, with scrolled shoulders leading to a scrolled swan-neck cornice, and putti bearing a crown over a skull.
The third headstone is for Nathan Chittenden, who died in 1728. It is similar in design to that of John Chittenden the elder, but features an incised profile head at the top. The fourth headstone is for Mary Chittenden, who died in 1716, and is identical to that of John Chittenden the elder. The fifth headstone commemorates Rebecca Chittenden, who died in 1722, and is also identical to the previous one.
