Description

There are three chest tombs located about 10 to 15 metres north of the Church of St Lawrence in Hawkhurst. One of the tombs is for Edmund Springett, who died in 1835. It features a platform with a moulded base, urn-shaped corner piers, and moulded side panels with chamfered corners, topped with a moulded slab. The other two tombs belong to members of the Chittenden family and date from the mid 18th century. The southern tomb has a moulded base, gadrooned urn-shaped corner piers, and raised and fielded panels with chamfered corners, also topped with a moulded slab. The northern tomb is identical except that its corner piers have a different design, featuring a fluted stem instead of a gadrooned bowl.
