Description

This is a threshing barn and adjoining cartshed located 30 meters south west of Fosters Farmhouse. The barn has a date of 1601 inscribed on its frame, with an addition that it was "rebuilt 1848." It features framed construction clad in weatherboarding and has a clay tile roof that is gabled at both ends. The adjoining cartshed is also framed and weatherboarded, with a hipped clay tile roof at the east end, suggesting it is a later addition.

The barn is oriented on an east-west axis and consists of three bays, with full-height threshing doors located in the center and a porch on the north side. The cartshed is attached to the east end and has two large entrances on the north side.

Inside the barn, the construction includes tie beams, queen posts, and clasped purlins. Originally, there were concave braces between the jowled wall posts and tie beams, but these have been replaced with straight braces, likely during the 1848 rebuilding. The trusses feature intermediate birdsmouth ties. The extent of the 1848 rebuilding is not entirely clear, but some wall framing likely dates from this period, replacing larger braced timbers with the current studs. A ridgeboard has also been added. The date 1601 is carved into the middle rail of the north wall, east of the porch, and appears to be authentic, as does the 19th-century date. The interior of the cartshed has not been inspected.

This traditional 17th-century agricultural building remains in agricultural use and has group value with Fosters Farmhouse.
