Description

A late 17th century threshing barn with an attached 18th century cartshed. The barn is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding on a plinth originally sandstone, now repaired in brickwork with some reused sandstone. It has a pegtiled roof, hipped to the west and half-hipped to the east. The barn measures 40 feet 4 inches by 18 feet 10 inches and has full-height wagon doors to the north and half-height doors to the south. Internally, the wall-frame features a midrail and diagonal tension braces. Some upright posts are jowled, and others have a curved profile. Long diagonal braces and horizontal boards flank the threshing floor on each side of the wagon entrance. A later floor has been inserted into the eastern bay. The roof structure incorporates tiebeams, collar beams, and original rafters, with a few reused medieval rafters halved for collars. The attached cartshed, to the south west, is built of brick in a Sussex bond and has a tiled roof. It has three bays, an open front to the east supported on wooden piers, and features tie beams, collar beams, purlins and a ridgepiece to the rafters. The buildings are part of a farm called “The Grove” south east of Robertsbridge, reflecting the 17th and 18th century trend towards larger farms. The original farmhouse, also called “The Grove”, is separately listed.
