Description

Mill Cottage is a small house, likely dating from the 18th century, with a later 18th or 19th century addition to the rear. The ground floor is built of painted brick, while the first floor is tile-hung, and the roof is covered in peg tiles. Brick stacks are present.

The house is oriented northwards, originally comprising two rooms at the front, with end stacks providing heating. A rear outshut was added later, featuring a gabled projection for the staircase in the centre. The original layout possibly consisted of a two-room dwelling with a parlour/kitchen at the right, heated by a large projecting stack, and an unheated room to the left; the left-hand stack is likely a 20th-century addition. A straight joint marks the boundary of the rear outshut, indicating its later construction.

The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring three bays, a gabled roof, a 20th-century flat-roofed central porch, and 20th-century timber casement windows. The rear elevation has a catslide roof over the outshut, a tile-hung gabled stair projection, one small window to the outshut, and two small attic dormers set into the rear ridge.

The right-hand room retains exposed carpentry, and other interesting features may be present.

Mill Cottage is an attractive example of a small, vernacular house. It has group value with the nearby Four Winds Windmill.
