Description
9 High Street is a small house that was originally two cottages, likely built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with renovations made in 1988. The building features plastered brick on the ground floor and weatherboarded framing above, topped with a peg-tile roof and a brick chimney. It faces west and is situated below the churchyard. The original layout likely consisted of two two-cell cottages, with the main rooms at the front sharing a central stack, while unheated service rooms were located at the back. The front doors, which were originally on the west elevation to the left and right, have been removed, and the house is now accessed from the left (north) end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with two windows. The ground floor features 20th-century twelve-pane sash windows that mimic earlier 19th-century styles, while the right window on the first floor is a similar sash. The left first-floor window is a two-light timber casement with glazing bars, dating from the 19th or 20th century. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have exposed framing. This house is part of a row of small vernacular houses and has group value with the nearby church. A photograph from 1956 is held in the National Monuments Record.
