Description

This is a pair of adjacent headstones located approximately 18 metres southwest of the tower of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow. They are dated 1774 and 1771 and commemorate members of the Barton family. Made of sandstone, the two headstones are similar in design, featuring upright slabs with curvilinear-shaped double heads. Both headstones are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, including some italics. The right headstone stands about 1.2 metres high and records the deaths of Barbara Barton in 1774 and her husband Anthony in 1783. The left headstone is approximately 1 metre high and commemorates the rector Thomas Barton, who died in 1771, and his wife Elizabeth, who passed away in 1763.
