Description
This is a pair of headstones located approximately 2 metres northeast of the vestry of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow. They are dated 1726 and 1739 and commemorate members of the Wells family. Made of sandstone, both headstones stand about 500mm high and feature curvilinear shaped heads with large Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The right headstone has a flat face and is crudely carved with a skull and crossbones; it records the death of Richard Wells in 1726. The left headstone has a double head and a recessed front panel, with the inscription divided into two columns: one for John Wells, who died in 1739, and the other for his wife Ann, whose date of death is illegible.
