Description
This is a row of four headstones, located approximately 3.5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow. The headstones date from between 1714 and 1724 and commemorate members of the James family. They are made of sandstone and feature upright slabs with curvilinear shaped heads and recessed front panels. The headstones vary in height from 400mm to 800mm and are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering.
The leftmost headstone has scroll-shaped ears, but its inscription is difficult to read except in ideal lighting conditions. Next to it is the most legible headstone, which is in memory of Sarah James, who died in 1724. This headstone also has scroll-shaped ears and features a crude carving of a skull and crossbones at the top. To the right of center is a double-headed stone, but most of its inscription has weathered away, leaving only the name Elizabeth visible. The rightmost headstone, which commemorates Elizabeth James who died in 1714, also has scroll-shaped ears carved with crossbones.
