Description

This is a pair of early 18th-century shops with living accommodation above, which were combined and given a new facade in the early 19th century, with further alterations around 1900. The building is constructed of diaper work brick in a Flemish bond pattern, topped by steeply pitched tiled roofs. The front is stuccoed with grooved detailing to resemble stone masonry. The building is two storeys and has attics, with a symmetrical arrangement of nine windows. A parapet features stone coping and a moulded cornice, and there are three 20th-century dormers with flat roofs. The right-hand section has five 12-pane sash windows with reeded architraves, and a doorcase with a flat wooden hood, pilasters, and a rectangular fanlight with intersecting glazing. The left-hand section is similar, but with sash windows that have horns. A deep wooden cornice with modillion detailing runs along the side elevation. Spear railings are attached to the front. Number 37 retains an 18th-century staircase with turned balusters.
