Description

27 and 29 High Street is a house that was formerly a house and shop, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It has been extensively restored in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and encased in 20th-century brickwork, with a two-storey rear addition. It features a tiled gabled roof with a bonnet hip to the north and has two storeys plus attics, with three windows. There is a large new central tile-hung gabled dormer and 20th-century leaded casements. The entrance is in a Tudor style from the 20th century. To the north, there is a small 19th-century shop window made of plate glass, with a clear glass casement above. At the rear, there is a 16th-century external brick chimneystack. Inside, the building has a roll-moulded dais beam, three jowled corner posts (one not in position), a 16th-century axial beam, and two square crown posts with head braces that support collar purlins. The interior also features old floorboards and a late 18th-century or early 19th-century winder staircase. The ground floor of No 27 retains the jetty bracket, a ceiling with linear chamfer and lamb's tongue stops, and a large open fireplace with a brick back and a large curved bressumer.
