Description
Brook House is a bank that was formerly a house, built in the 18th century. The front was altered in the mid-19th century and restored in the late 20th century after a fire. The front is stuccoed and incised to imitate masonry, featuring a renewed mansard slate roof and a brick chimneystack. The building has two storeys and attics, with five windows. It is flanked by giant pilasters topped with stone urns. There are three pedimented dormers with pilasters and stone brackets. The windows are recessed 12-pane sashes with horns and keystones. A large central Tuscan doorcase features a triglyph frieze and engaged columns, and there is a moulded stucco plinth. A low stuccoed wall encloses the forecourt. Notably, Dr. Johnson was a visitor here.
