Description

Abbey Gate House is an office building dating from the early 19th century, with an extension added in the mid-19th century, located in Swan Street, West Malling. The original front range is constructed of red brick with painted brick on its side elevation and a stone coping. It features two 12-pane sash windows on the front elevation. The early 19th-century doorcase on the right has a triglyph frieze, reeded pilasters, and a rectangular fanlight above a six-fielded panelled door, with attached spear railings and urn finials. A single 12-pane sash window sits within a moulded architrave on the left side elevation. The building has a cemented plinth. To the right of the original range is a mid-19th century extension composed of two parallel ranges, built with painted brick and featuring an old tiled roof, along with a one-storey mid-19th-century range to the rear, containing 2:4:2 sashes. The interior includes a staircase hall with two columns with plumed capitals, and a staircase with stick balusters. The left front room has panelling and a wooden fireplace, and the room behind contains a china cupboard with serpentine shelves.
