Description

Whitakers is a house which originally comprised a pair of cottages, dating from 1758 and later refenestrated in the 20th century. The house is constructed mainly of ironstone random rubble, with galleted detailing, and has red brick dressings. A strip of Kentish ragstone rubble is visible above the original central doorcases, extending to the full height of the building. The roof is tiled, with weatherboarded gables and a red brick chimneystack centrally placed on the ridge of the right side. The house is two storeys high, with four windows. It features 20th-century casement windows within brick surrounds, and the ground-floor windows have cambered head linings. The right-side cottage retains a four-panelled door. The doorcase to the left-side cottage has been replaced by a 20th-century four-light bay window with a tiled roof. A deep plinth is present. Two ironstone plaques are fixed to the first floor of the left side of the house; the left plaque is inscribed "THOS WHITAKER MAY THE 1 1758" and the right plaque reads "SAR H WHITAKER MAY THE 1 1758". A single-storey addition extends to the left, built with 18th-century brickwork and a peg-tiled roof. The rear elevation incorporates both ironstone and brickwork and has three sash windows.
