Description

Plaxtol Church is a church built in 1649, with restorations in 1852 and further work on the chancel and transepts in 1894. The structure features coursed, galletted rubble stone for the nave and tower, which sits on a stone plinth. The two-stage tower is crenellated and has the only unrestored window from 1649 on its west side. The nave has four bays and a gabled south porch with a 19th-century gable-parapet and kneelers. There are north and south transepts that include 3-light windows, with the south transept having a semi-basement entrance and a boarded and ribbed door topped with a dripmould. The west side has a three-light window, and corner buttresses are present at the east end, with the northeast buttress on the north transeptal chapel allowing for a walkway.

Inside, the original rectangular six-bay layout of the church is visible. There is a pointed tower arch and a hammer-beam roof that rests on tripled octagonal stone wall-shafts, with king posts above. The transepts have wooden tie-beam truss roofs. The chancel is raised and features a barrel-vault supported by carved brackets on imposts. A marble reredos contains three wooden reliefs of the Last Supper, likely Flemish from the 15th century. There is also a later relief panel depicting the parting of the Red Sea in the south transept. The 17th-century pulpit is panelled and includes introduced figure reliefs. Additionally, there are a pair of Rococo brass chandeliers dated 1785 and a Baroque cartouche monument to Thomas Dalyson, who died in 1741.
