Description

Great Comp is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of limewashed brick with a wide plinth, mullioned cellar lights, and some stone dressings. Two moulded strings run around the facade, though their levels are inconsistent and they do not extend across the entire front; one is positioned two levels above the ground floor, and the other below the eaves. The eaves are moulded and project, supported by brackets and featuring a gutter. The roof is tiled, with large end stacks and four hipped dormers. The two-storey front has a slightly irregular four-window arrangement. Stone mullioned casement windows are present, some with transoms. A gabled porch, added in the 19th century, is off-centre to the left, featuring a margin light door. The rear elevation was altered in the 19th century, and now includes some modern extensions. The interior retains little of its original features, except for chamfered beams with run-out stops in one ground floor room. Early 17th century panelling and a later 17th century staircase, brought in from a farmhouse in Offham, are also present. A large stack of unused window mullions buttresses the rear of the left-hand end stack in the cellar. Blocked brick windows in the sides of the house may be of Tudor date, suggesting the house is a remodel of a wing of an earlier, larger building. Evidence of the foundations of other wings has been found.
