Description

This building is a threshing barn located approximately 30 meters north of The Poult House. It dates from the 18th century or early 19th century, although some of the timbers may be from the 17th century. The barn features weatherboarded timber-framing and a peg-tile roof.

The barn faces northwest and has nearly full-height opposing double doors that open onto a central threshing floor. There are integral outshots at both ends and across the rear. The doorways and windows are 20th-century replacements, with plain plank double doors at the front, 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and garage doors for the lean-to outshots. The barn has a gable-ended design, but the roof is hipped at the north end and extends down each side and to the rear over the outshots.

Inside, the barn consists of five bays. Mortises in the middle rails and wall plates indicate that the non-structural framing, which includes slender straight tension braces, is a secondary addition. Mortises in the wall posts suggest that there were once arch braces to the wall plates. The full-height wall posts have jowled heads and support arch-braced tie-beams. Above, there are collared trusses with clasped side purlins and queen struts.

This barn is a well-preserved example of an unconverted Kent barn.
