Description

Faulkners Oast is an oasthouse dating from the mid to late 19th century, and converted into two dwellings around 1973. Constructed of Flemish bond red brick, the main stowage section has a slate roof, while the three hop kilns on each long side have peg-tile roofs. The building is laid out on an east-west axis.

The main stowage block has wide, projecting bays at each end, framed with timber and weatherboarding, and incorporating 20th-century windows. The original windows around the remainder of the building, including those in the hop kilns, have low segmental brick arches; later inserted windows have flat arches and contain circa 1973 casements without glazing bars. The stowage roof is hipped at both ends. The hop kilns are topped with tall conical roofs and cowls.

The interior retains plain 19th-century carpentry where exposed. The roofspace was not inspected. This is a particularly fine oasthouse located within an historically significant hop-growing area.
