Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church, primarily from the 14th century, with significant restoration work carried out in the 19th century. It features a nave with a south aisle, a chancel, and a chapel, along with a west tower dating from around 1300, constructed of ragstone covered with Roman cement. The church has ragstone walling in other areas and a tiled roof. The Perpendicular windows were renewed during the restoration by Joseph Clarke around 1857, and there is one Norman window located in the chancel.
Inside, the nave and aisle roofs are supported by crown-post trusses on moulded tie-beams. Notable interior features include brasses commemorating William and Mary Whetonhall from 1539, various large memorial tablets, and memorials for Elizabeth Goldinge who died in 1595, Roger Twysden from 1611, Elizabeth Twysden from 1655, and the Twysden family from 1689. The church is currently under the care of the Redundant Churches Commission.
