Description
Dower House is a house built around 1690, likely representing the near-complete rebuilding of an earlier structure from the same century. It features red brick with blue headers and has a heavily moulded cornice with volute brackets and modillions, concealing lead gutters beneath a hipped tiled roof that includes two hipped dormers. The building has a brick plinth and a plat band, with a slightly projecting central bay that is accentuated by pilaster strips on either side of a central brick panel. The house is two storeys high and consists of seven bays, with glazing bar sash windows that have gauged flat arched heads. There is a modern Corinthian porch at the entrance. The return fronts have four bays, and the west side includes a canted bay on the ground floor to the left. At the rear, there is a single-storey brick wing from the 19th century.
Inside, there is a balustered open-well staircase from around 1700, which has a bracketed modillion cornice in the stair hall. The hall features a 19th-century fireplace, while the drawing room has an early 18th-century wood fireplace and 18th-century panelling. The sitting room also contains an 18th-century fireplace.
