Description

Limes Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating to approximately the mid-17th century, although it may incorporate an earlier structure. It has undergone 20th-century alterations, including replacement windows. The house is framed construction with brick underbuilding, painted white. The front elevation is tile-hung on the first floor, while the north elevation is plastered. The roof is covered in peg tiles, and there are brick stacks.

The house has a roughly U-shaped plan, comprising two parallel blocks running east-west, connected by a block set at a right angle between them. The layout and development of the building remain unclear due to limited access during a 1988 survey. The south block's external details suggest a mid-to-late 17th-century construction, but the north block could be older.

The two-storey farmhouse has an almost symmetrical three-window front. The south block has a gable to the front on the left, and the north block’s roof is half-hipped on the right. The south block gable is jettied with a richly-moulded, stopped 17th-century bresummer supported by brackets. All windows are 20th-century plate glass casements in enlarged openings. A wall post base is visible on the front elevation, and some framing is exposed on the ground floor of the north return, which also features 20th-century casement windows. The north block has two 20th-century stacks. A photograph from 1957 indicates that an axial stack was removed from the front block.

Interior access was unavailable during the 1988 survey. An internal inspection is recommended before any alterations are carried out, to preserve potentially significant features, including the possibility of an early roof structure.
