Description
Francis Cottages are two small houses, likely dating from the early 18th century. They were originally four cottages. The construction is framed, with the first floor clad in tile hanging, and a peg-tile roof. The buildings feature stacks with brick shafts. The original plan comprised four two-cell cottages, each with a heated room and a service outshot containing the staircase. Back-to-back fireplaces are located in the axial stacks.
The front of the cottages was originally symmetrical with four windows, although it has been altered later. There are paired front doors in the center, now with 20th-century porches. There are four windows to the first floor and four to the ground floor; some are small-pane casements, while others feature 20th-century plate glass casements.
The interior of the left-hand cottage was inspected, and original carpentry and joinery of a plain character remain. The original staircase has a bead-moulded handrail and balusters. There are no jowls to the wallposts.
